On Saturday November 3rd we went to the Ft. Worth Zoo. It is an hour from our house but we had heard lots of great things about it so thought it was time to check it out. Bill's mom, Shirley, went with us but his dad was sick and had to stay home.
We started in the Safari area where we saw cheetahs, rhinos, zebras, giraffes and various monkeys. Sam wanted to walk and was a bundle of energy for about an hour. Then he crashed by the time we got to the elephants which was the one thing he really wanted to see. At the giraffe cage there was a stream between the fence and the giraffes. There were big fish and turtles in the stream and that was all that Sam was interested in. I'm not even sure if he saw the giraffes. He was so excited about the big fish and turtle. He said "Mimi and pappy, turtles" which meant that he remembered feeding the turtles, ducks and fish at Mimi and Pappy's this summer. Even that night he was still talking about going to Mimi and Pappy's and seeing the turtles.
We toured the zoo for an hour or so and then sat and ate lunch. After lunch we went to the Texas area where there are cows, horses, a petting zoo and a train. Sam, Bill and Shirley went to the petting zoo while I took Claire to the bathroom for a diaper change. Apparently the petting zoo wasn't that exciting. Then Sam, Shirley and I rode the train back to the entrance while Bill pushed Claire in the stroller. Sam had a hard time standing in line for the train. He kept jumping over a rope and running back and forth. When the train finally came he tried to run in front of everyone. The train ride itself was only about 5 minutes and we didn't see a whole lot except for construction of a new exhibit and some flamingos. After we got off the train we went into the gift shop so that Grandma could buy some stuff for the kids and then we left. There was still a lot that we didn't see but it was after 2:00 and Sam was in need of a nap. Claire had napped while we were on the train so she was okay but we knew that it would be an interesting ride home with Sam and we were right. He was in a very bad mood and a half hour into the drive Claire started screaming b/c she was hungry. We were very happy to get home and put Sam down for a much needed nap and feed Claire. We hope to go to the zoo again in the spring and maybe we'll get to see a little more of it.
